Hallo all! My name is Gareth Hughes. I am an Anglican priest, living in Oxford, England. I am Chaplain of Hertford College, Oxford, and study Syriac at the Oriental Institute in the University of Oxford. I am most interested in working on articles about language and linguistics, and religion and spirituality. I have been a Wikipedian since 23 November 2004, and an administrator since 21 October 2005 (RfA). My greatest achievement here so far has been writing the Aramaic language article to featured status. Wikiblessings!

On the boil
[edit]- History of Eastern Christianity in Asia and Nestorianism in China.
- Polishing up Syriac language (expanding the grammar section).
- Collaboration on Arabic literature, Arabic poetry and Arabic epic literature.
- Biblical Aramaic and the Aramaic of Jesus need a lot more work done on them.
- Syriac Christianity could do with expansion.
- Bardaisan article needs moved and reworked.
- Members of the covenant needs completed.
- Doctrine of Addai or Teaching of Addai needs a proper treatment.
- Improve articles on Jacob of Nisibis, Jacob of Serugh, Narsai, Philoxenus of Mabbog, Babai the Great (other Babais), Isaac of Nineveh, Jacob of Edessa, Ishodad of Merv, Dionysius bar Salibi/Jacob Bar-Salibi, Jacob Baradaeus, Joshua the Stylite, Barsauma, Peter the Fuller, Ibas, Rabbula, Yahya ibn `Adi, Severus of Antioch, Ishoyahb (two of them) – see my list at /projects#Syriac literature

Simmering
[edit]- Writing a more complete article on the Syriac Orthodox Church.
- Giving a hand with Barnabas.
- Different approaches to categorizing Semitic languages.
- Grammatical tense in a horrible state, perhaps Tense (linguistics) is needed, but do we also need a Tense (phonetics)? The dumping ground for source material about tense from the world's languages is at Grammatical tense/multilingual sources.
Back burner
[edit]- Taking a look at List of dialects of the English language.
- Church of England needs some attention: it reads more like a history book.
- Holidays and festivals (fancy one?).
- Likewise for Grammatical aspect.
- English grammar - proof that speaking it doesn't mean you know how it works.
- Ephrem the Syrian could be reread and reworked.
- Articles on Neo-Aramaic languages (I've written the articles, but it'd be good to do the rounds once more).
- Lots of little tweaks around Ancient Egypt and Egyptian hieroglyphs.
- Some work on the UN observances.
- Helping to edit a fair Assyrian article (and maybe Chaldean): there is a lot of political POV here.
